I learnt to Fly with the Aero Club of Papua from 1964 until 1965. During our night flying circuit training a couple of Aero club members operated the tower while the others did cicuits. I don't think that would be permitted today. Good old days.

Of course the neighbour on the Highway was the late Ray Gorris of "Ray Gorris Sports Store " fame. He is Simon Wilde's grandfather. To the Back of us was 2 vacant blocks. We owned one and were always going to do something withit but never did and on the other side was "Taubada Bobby-one leg bugarup" Towers with his Nita theatre and the block in between us was taken up in 1964 by one of lifes gentlmen Timothy Mack and his lovely family. 1964 is when the Australian government allowed the New Guinea Chinese to move in to Papua there by putting Papua on the comercial map. Thus was the birth of Ping's Boroko.

This was not used as a used car yard till 1963. prior to this it was Boroko transport where the 16 International Harvester tip trucks were maitained by Vic Carter as he was providing the trucks to build the part of the Sogeri road from the Turkeys nest to "Woody's Rouna Hotel" (which was the base hospital for the Kokoda track fighting.) Prior to the road going in the rubber from sogeri was carried down Hombrom's bluff by donkeys. (i last saw the donkey tack from this trade in a tack room on Hisu plantation in about 1979)I think it was owned by BNGD which I think was Burns Philp's plantation division. Back to Boroko transport yard the workshops on the back of the land where the panel beating shops for Boroko Motors and the building on Turumu street was the specialy built car spray painting booths which eventualy became in about 1977/78 Dharlenburg and Ramshaw mooved in and started Daltron Electronics. I know that shortly before of after Dennis Buchanan started Talairs travel office there also. The Boroko Transport yard is where we stored the CIG gas bottles as these we had to ship from CIG brisbane and of course return the empties usually on Burns Philp ships as the Swire ships where allways dificult to do business with as they still are today.

This is the site of the original "P & T" Boroko telephone exchange. I remember it as an old ww2 green corugated iron warehouse. Post and telegraphs bought the block next to the site for the new Boroko Police station however Jimmy and Betty Frames "Highland Vegitable shop" and their home was between the two P & T sites so Bill Carter and Bill Peckover the Director and assistant Director of the Department arrranged for John Buchan Snr to broker a deal between Jimmy Frame and P&T to do a swap which is today why the Boroko post office is on such a large parcel of land. The old P&T sight which I think was originally a bakery was eventually sold to Hugo and Krista Berghauser who built Hugo's building. There is much more to this story in every way but this is my first attempt at Wiki (LOL Not so for Wika!!!.....LOL).

In 1964 I worked as a mechanic for Boroko Motors. It was owned by a Phylis Carter and managed by John Buchan. The owners residence was moved in 1966 and a showroom added to display the new cars. Flats were attached to the rear of the workshop where the mechanics and panel beaters lived. The panel shop was across the road, behind where the second hand cars were sold. They were great years.
